According to the American Library Association, Uncle Bobby's Wedding was one of the most-challenged books of 2008. Sarah speaks at conferences and schools about diversity and intellectual freedom, as well as the process of writing and illustrating for children. She is a regular contributor to AppleSeeds and SkatingMagazines, and she covers figure skating for US Figure Skating and Ice Network.

Sarah won the 2007 Ann Barrow Scholarship from the New England chapter of the Society of Children's Book Writers and Illustrators. She was awarded the runner-up 2006 SCBWI Work-in-Progress Grant for Flying Over the Ice, a biography of figure skater Johnny Weir. She was also the runner-up for the 2003 Don Freeman Memorial Grant-in-Aid.
